Située dans un bol en haut de l'arête de Nazareth au nord de la vallée de Jizreel, Nazareth était un village relativement isolé du temps de Jésus, avec une population de moins de deux cents habitants.

Aujourd'hui Nazareth abrite près de 60 000 arabes israéliens, la partie supérieure de la ville  logeant plusieurs milliers d'habitants juifs.

Très peu d'informations ont été trouvées concernant Nazareth dans les anciens temps. En dehors du Nouveau Testament, Nazareth n'est jamais mentionné jusqu'à l'époque Byzantine (IVe siècle). Des excavations archéologiques ont confirmé le fait que la ville n'était qu'un petit village agricole durant les époques grecques et romaines.

Église de l'Annonciation

Une église byzantine fut élevée à l'endroit où il est cru que l'ange Gabriel annonça la naissance de Jésus à la vierge Marie. En 1966 l'église catholique romaine commença la construction d'une nouvelle basilique en dessus des ruines, qui aujourd'hui est la plus grande du Moyen Orient. L'église orthodoxe grecque fut bâtie au-dessus de la source d'eau de la ville.

Jésus passa son enfance à Nazareth avant de commencer son ministère vers l'âge de trente ans. Après avoir changé son lieu de résidence vers Capernaüm, Jésus retourna à deux reprises pour prêcher dans la synagogue de Nazareth, mais fut rejeté chaque fois. Une fois les habitants étaient tellement furieux envers Jésus qu'ils essayèrent de le jeter du haut d'une falaise afin de le tuer.
