Tell Lakis

Identifié premièrement comme étant Lakis par Albright en 1929, le tell fut excavé par James Leslie Starkey entre 1932-38 puis par l'Université de Tel Aviv entre 1973-87.

Lakis est généralement considérée comme la seconde ville la plus importante du royaume méridional de Juda. Elle est présente dans plusieurs récits bibliques, comprenant les récits de batailles de Josué, de Sennachérib et de Nebucadnetsar.

Rampe d'Approche

La ville fut entourée de deux murailles, comprenant un mur de soutient. La rampe d'approche se dirigeait vers une porte extérieure qui en retour donnait vers la porte à trois chambres intérieure.

Lakis est le seul tell du pays appartenant aux Autorités Antiquaires d'Israël. Ce fut un héritage des Anglais, l'ayant acheté pour des excavations.

Temples-Fosse

Les excavations de Starkey du fossé côté ouest du tell mirent au jour une riche collection de trouvailles de temples-fosse de l'Age de Bronze Avancé. Trois temples successifs construits par les habitants cananéens furent finalement détruit vers 1200 av. JC.

Après le meurtre de Starkey en 1938, la  population arabe du coin pilla tout ce qui restait du temple, surtout les restes du niveau le plus bas.  

Rampe de Siège

La seule rampe de siège excavée dans le Proche Orient antique reste celle élevée par les forces de Sennachérib lors de son invasion en 701 av. JC contre Juda. Plus de 1000 pointes de flèches de fer furent découvertes dans cette rampe, ainsi qu'une chaîne servant à attacher un bélier.   

Cette rampe est dépeinte dans les reliefs de Sennachérib ainsi que cinq béliers l'ascendant. 

Palais Israélite

Vers la fin de la monarchie Judéenne, cette résidence de gouverneur mesurait près de la moitié d'un acre. C'est la plus grand structure connue en Israël datant de l'Age de Fer. Bâtit sur le sommet du tell, ce palais fut élevé en trois phases discernables, aidant ainsi les archéologues à comprendre la longueur de la coudée lors des différentes périodes, anciennes ou plus avancées. Évidences d'écuries pour chevaux ont aussi été trouvées.

Vue de la Montagne de Juda

La fameuse Lettre #4 de Lakis dépeint comment l'auteur attendait et cherchait les signaux de feu de Lakis, après que ceux d'Azéka ne soient plus visibles.  Peut-être l'écrivain de cet ostracon était-il entrain d'observer la destruction des villes du Shephelah depuis les montagnes à l'ouest. Jérémie 34:7 corrobore le fait que les deux dernières villes restantes furent Azéka et Lakis.
